// we heard GJ users cry / we heard them pray the night the database died //
Okay, all joking and GJ derision aside:

The main database of GreatestJournal has failed and the entire site is now running on a backup

If you have anything you were putting off backing up or migrating, you're really going to want to do it NOW. For those of you mirroring your journals... well, your choice to keep doing it there or not.

Sucks I was never able to get FCH and NDR archived, but it was mostly owls I never kept copies of like I did with logs and ongoing threads, so it's not a OMGdevastating loss. I'm really glad I picked up that habit of writing and saving threads in a doc back when my old computer used to randomly restart and I needed the AutoSave feature so much, it's definitely helped a lot with this GJ backup and archive business in not having to do webpage saves of all my old scenes.

Dear GJ,

Thank you so much for spamming my inbox with month-and-some old email notifs.

You still suck.

Much loathing,
Me

various tech ramblings
STUPID ICE STORMS. Yeah, it's given me time to work on all the archiving/reposting/moving stuff, but wah, I want [info]dani_forever back online. :(

But, finally, I have everything backed up from GJ except two game comms, as those LJ-archive files refuse to sync after nearly uploading everything. I'll keep trying at non-busy site times but as I've backed up everything important to me on those two comms anyhow in the process of RPing on them or going back and webpage saving forever ago, it's not a huge deal if the files never sync (I think the NDR file is something like 1400 entries, so yeah, huge thing :D). So all character journals (mine and Dani's) archived, all user infos webpage saved for posterity, my CDJ archived and exported to LJ as a whole and profiles/apps only to IJ.

Now to upload what feels like 50 billion icons to all my personal and character accounts since I'll be more active on IJ for RPG now between this journal, my CDJ [info]jessi_muses and my private RPG comms. LJ will still be for what it always has been, fannish and my f-list in general, but my CDJ on GJ is only to read my f-list and find icons on, not store character stuff anymore.

I think this is the account I want to buy a permanent account for at IJ in support of how great [info]squeaky has been. My CDJ likely won't get as much action with some people staying on GJ and me only really needing it to backup applications and profiles off-computer. I probably won't buy it on sale, though, as I likely won't do it until after the first of the year. My LJ is up for renewal in less than a few weeks and I don't want to lose my paid account there, even despite all the LJ drama. If my f-list wasn't so big and I wasn't so active there, I wouldn't bother, but... yeah, will be renewing it.

My fannish website is now live with its new site layout, though most of the content still needs to be uploaded. I'm going to utilize it for RPG purposes too, so I no longer have to rely solely on a journaling service for housing my RPG history and examples and other things useful for applying to games, though I doubt I'll be joining any new games anytime soon. My two private games that moved to IJ keep me pretty busy in addition to FairlyTales, which is staying on GJ for now. I really do need to shake this 'GJ will eat my stuff if I don't obsessively back-up everything right this second' thing I have right now, as it's making it hard to jump back into the game. I'm a RL and virtual pack-rat, I like having things saved or where I can always look over them. GJ doesn't inspire long-term confidence anymore.

Next on my list, since I enjoyed setting up my fannish website, is to recreate and revamp and expand my personal website somewhere (I don't really care for geocities anymore, despite the ease of use). Anyone know any good free sites? I'd prefer something where I can have a myname.sitename.com (or .net or .whatever), rather than one that would be sitename.com/myname - just personal preference, really. I don't even need a site that has a built in FTP manager as I have FileZilla now and it's proved easy to use.

I asked Zane for a book on CSS for Christmas since I'm enjoying learning it. As little as two years ago, I could only code HTML very basically and I'm only learning about CSS in bits now, so I feel it's time to step up my design knowledge, especially as I want to do things with CSS I haven't yet figured out how to do by studying free site schemes and tutorials and such.
